Fisheries Management Project in Banner Elk

We spent a day last week in beautiful Banner Elk executing a comprehensive fisheries management plan for a client! A healthy pond requires more than just pretty water; it requires a balanced ecosystem and a strategic roadmap. Keep reading for a project breakdown, a video of some of our work, and a special note from Kurt Bland.

Data Collection

We kicked things off with an electrofishing survey to assess the current species diversity. Understanding the baseline is critical before making future lake or pond management decisions.

Habitat Engineering

While the survey was underway, our team assembled and installed artificial habitat structures. These provide essential cover and breeding grounds for smaller fish and optimized hunting grounds for future predators.

Stocking for Success

We concluded the day by introducing a healthy forage base of Bluegill, Redear Shellcracker, and Golden Shiners.

What’s Next?

By establishing a robust forage base now, we are setting the stage for a successful predator introduction, like Largemouth Bass, later this fall.
